new year, new weather

wednesday

10 miles in the park in a windy snow squall this evening with temps in the 20’sF after last evening’s more mild temperatures that allowed for a more pleasant run of 10 miles with my son.  It’ll be cold tomorrow before the temps reach the 50’s and maybe 60 degrees F on Saturday. An unpredictable start to the new year.

weather’s the story

wednesday

A great 10 mile run tonight in the park.  It was cooler than it has been, though certainly not as bad as the Midwest area being hit with an April blizzard – feel bad for those folks.  Had a smooth run tonight, legs not so tired, first time in a while. Just checked the weather forecast for next Monday’s Boston (if I were running it, the weather check would be an obsession these weeks), and I can’t believe they might have a repeat of last year’s epic storm.  I thought they’d get a break this year. It’s New England, things could change between now and Monday.

tapering…

thursday

taper ~ marathon week

5 miles easy around the neighborhood after work.  Warmer and breezier today while breaking in the racing flats – they feel good.  One more run tomorrow before catching the evening flight to Boston, probably the last run before Monday.  The weather forecast remains the same for the race, rain and windy, getting worse as the days progresses, a storm for New England all its own, a marathon special.

old clothes

wednesday

taper ~ marathon week

Took off from running yesterday to give the body some more recovery, slept well, and went for an easy 6 miler around the neighborhood, continuing to break in the racing shoes and simulating the race weather a bit.  It was windy today and got hit with some cross winds part of the run, like the probable cross winds during Monday’s marathon. Started packing, fly to Boston Friday night to stay with Kevin and Mariani over the long weekend, and Kevin, a masters competitor himself, has old clothes I’ll be able to wear as ‘throw aways’ at the start which is supposed to be cold and wet.  I like to pack light.  The weather decided to be a factor this year.

talk about the weather

wednesday

(only) 2 weeks til Boston, it’s starting to get real…

10 easy miles around the park and the neighborhood on a relatively mild day.  Felt okay, feeling recovered from Sunday’s race/workout.  Took yesterday off, tired, thought a day off to recover some more couldn’t hurt.  The weather’s supposed to turn nasty the next couple of days, with cold steady rain tomorrow and a mix of snow and rain on Friday, and a cold weekend.  Then a sharp warm up on Monday.  We’re close enough to Boston that the weather pattern here’s comparable, and all these changes coming this week and next feel like a slot machine.  From here on out the weather, too, will be on our minds…

watching the weather

tuesday

An easy 7 mile run around the city this evening in the dark.  The cold and breezy night called for some extra layers and took a couple of miles to warm up.  It’ll warm up a tad the next couple of days with a few light showers forecasted for Thanksgiving morning during the Turkey Trot.  The slight warm up will mean a breeze from the south against us in this southward point to point 8k race.  Seems like a trend for the race the past several years, the higher temps leading to a headwind.  The wrong wind direction is still better than sub-zero conditions.

can’t do much about the weather

friday

5 easy miles around the parkway, mostly on grass, just to stay loose and focused for Sunday’s Half.  Another cool day, it’s supposed to warm up a bit over the weekend.  Driving there tomorrow and staying over.

It looks increasingly like rain for race day, ‘scattered thunderstorms,’ 50-60% chance (never sure what these % means).  Doesn’t sound good, but I don’t know the Rochester area well, so not sure which areas will be hit the most.  Much of the Half will be in and near the city, so let’s hope the rain stays mostly in the ‘burbs.  Can’t do much about the weather, so will focus on the race.  My cross/distance racing shoes, in which I can go sockless, should help a lot.

At least my son and his team will finally have decent weather for their race at an invitational on Saturday in Grand Island, NY.  We’ll be pulling for each other.
