feeling warmer and blessed

Having eaten and cleaned up and now warm, feeling whole again. So glad that marathon run is over. Just wasn’t going to be my day. Happy to finish (2:59, 22nd 50-54 AG) and not drop out as I nearly did from near hypothermia…Still, feel blessed to have been a part of such an incredible event and be with great friends here in Boston. And thanks to everyone for all your well wishes!!

the calm

IMG_20180414_151732The expo yesterday. Relaxing today. The calm before the storm. Literally. It’ll be a furious marathon on a stormy Monday.

taper ~ marathon week

5 miles easy around the neighborhood after work.  Warmer and breezier today while breaking in the racing flats – they feel good.  One more run tomorrow before catching the evening flight to Boston, probably the last run before Monday.  The weather forecast remains the same for the race, rain and windy, getting worse as the days progresses, a storm for New England all its own, a marathon special.

old clothes

taper ~ marathon week

Took off from running yesterday to give the body some more recovery, slept well, and went for an easy 6 miler around the neighborhood, continuing to break in the racing shoes and simulating the race weather a bit.  It was windy today and got hit with some cross winds part of the run, like the probable cross winds during Monday’s marathon. Started packing, fly to Boston Friday night to stay with Kevin and Mariani over the long weekend, and Kevin, a masters competitor himself, has old clothes I’ll be able to wear as ‘throw aways’ at the start which is supposed to be cold and wet.  I like to pack light.  The weather decided to be a factor this year.

the one

taper ~ 1 week from boston, holy smokes

Legs felt tight from weekend running, went for an easy 6 miler, the first day of a weeklong process of breaking in the new racing flats.  The Asics finally arrived over the weekend just in time to get used to them over several days. They fit well immediately and felt right during today’s run, eventually getting the lacings to the right tension and earning it my triple knot ‘honor.’  You just know when the shoes are right, and these feel like ‘the one,’ unlike the ‘faux’ Aiscs I got for New York last fall, though I’m not going to lay all the blame on it…I wear tri racing flats in case of inclement weather, which is now forecasted around the Marathon, rain and winds.  Not going to stress over the weather, trained too hard for this, in many conditions, Bring it On.

milestone 2.0

taper ~ 1 day and 1 week from boston

A weekend plan completed: good tune-up race yesterday and the final long (hard) run before the marathon with a 14 miler today to the park and back.  The legs were a little tired and sore from yesterday’s 5k and having to go into the store this morning, but was a good reminder of so many of the runs during this winter/spring training.  Was good to have the images and feel of this winter’s work implanted in my brain. It’ll be easy running the rest of the week…

a good tune-up

taper ~ 2 days and 1 week from boston

After no running yesterday on a depressingly wintry snowy day, ran a nice 5k race this morning – the same tune up 5k I ran last year – a nice fundraiser for a local church.  With a 4 mile warm up and 4 mile cool down, 11 miles for the day.  And even got a win with a 17:56 run, not a world beater time but happy with how I felt strong and in control throughout most of the run. So a nice boost with a week to go. Got some hardware and had a great time with friends.
