not an ounce wasted

friday

A really good 12 mile run in the park then through downtown Buffalo, now that it’s getting warmer – except the past few days – get to run around the city more.  Getting ready for the Grand Island Half in a little over a week, a race organized by my club and one I enjoy.

Couldn’t run it last year around this time, my father passed away, training for this race is a constant reminder of his passing, in fact, a day before my mother’s birthday – he always had a flair for the dramatic.  It seems like just last week that I was in Boston preparing for his wake and funeral, putting the final touches on his eulogy.  He never retired, worked into his 80’s, literally working until the day before the devastating stroke that would eventually take his life.

Not sure what it’ll be like for me this weekend, the year anniversary.  As always running will help me find what I’m looking for.  I know one thing, he epitomized that Hunter S. Thompson exhortation:

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”
