kids of all ages

9 easy recovery miles with my son in the park, a wonderful run full of good conversation about movies, relaxing and free in the cool misty humid conditions.  It’s great to have him home for the summer, your adult children still are your children for parents and the connection continues, especially during good runs.

autumn around the corner

the road to new york

My son left for New York today to move into his new digs in Brooklyn for the new year at college, a cool day that feels like October, got in a good 12 miler in the park.  A 5k tomorrow evening that’s forecasted to be even cooler, with a Friday nite post race party in the neighborhood.  Adding some miles beforehand.  Took the plunge and agreed to run a couple of x-country races in September with an area club’s masters team, will be fun and will be incorporated into the month’s marathon training.  No rest for the marathoner.

today and looking forward

Still feeling the effects of marathon training, did 8 miles to the park with my son, then another 5 miles afterwards.  The cool fall-like day made the run pleasant.  The weather was appropriate also for the season of back to school, my son heads back to New York for school tomorrow, can’t believe the summer’s already over, it was a great summer, will miss the kid. Will see him in just a couple of months during the marathon weekend, many reasons to look forward to the future.

in it now

the road to new york

Been a busy weekend, running and otherwise…

Yesterday: Ran the 10k in the morning, a solid 35:28 (5:42/mile pace) tired and sore from the past couple weeks’ training, 12 miles total including the warm and cool down.  Came in 3rd overall, 2nd male – 2nd place went to a female, Allie Kieffer, no ordinary female runner.  Allie, a former Wake Forest standout, is a top national class runner who recently moved to Buffalo.  She caught me with about a mile to go, I was able to stay with her and her beautiful running form til the final quarter mile when she kicked away to finish in 35:16.  Felt good to be able to stay with her in the final mile.  Oh, and the winner was Mark Andrews, in 33:50, a USATF masters champion in the 5k and 10k.  Was amazing to be in such elite company in a local race!

Then in the afternoon, went on a lovely hike with my son in the Niagara Gorge near the Falls (see photos).  A hike we’ve done often ever since he was small, was a wonderful thing to do before he heads back to NYC for college this Thursday.

Today: Tired from yesterday’s full day of fitness, went for a 16 miler.  A tough one after yesterday’s hard run.  Now I know I’m ‘in it,’ fully in what I call ‘the cave’ of constant fatigue and soreness of marathon training.  Won’t be out of it til tapering.

good times ahead

Did the recovery run this afternoon that I missed yesterday due to the sore left foot from the race, the foot felt much better today allowing me to do a nice 15 miler on a sunny comfortable day.  The first 9 miles were with my son and then added on 6 for good measure.  The miles are starting the creep up as this marathon training gets rolling, though the intensity in effort and miles won’t hit full stride til September.  Looks like my son found a nice place in Brooklyn to live off campus with friends for his second year at school, excited for him, and now I can stay a little longer after the marathon.

life is good on friday

Yesterday’s storms didn’t wash away all the humidity, a sweaty 9 mile run with my son in the park and around the neighborhood, about to have dinner and ice cream on this beautiful Friday evening, life is good because the weekend is here or is it the weekend is here because life is good?

food party

A gastronomically glorious afternoon at the Taste of Buffalo after a mid-day 10 mile run with my son.  Had a hard time picking from so many choices, went with samplings of Thai summer rolls, dumplings, southern bbq, buffalo spiced burgers, curried fish hoagies, washing it down with some cherry vanilla brewed wheat beer and finished with some locally made ice cream cones and fruit ice.  We ran down to the festival but strolled the few miles back home.
