2nd semester, 2nd year

Got in 10 miles with my son, our customary run to the park and back, the temps were sane, somewhere in the 20’s, snow falling gently.  A great run with great conversation, our conversations get better and deeper as he gets older, now a college sophomore and turning 20 later this year.  20!  He goes back tonight to New York to start the 2nd semester, an overnight bus with a ticket he bought from a friend as a favor because she couldn’t use it.  A good person.  I’m sad that he’s heading back.  But getting more accustomed to this empty nest thing, as I explained to a friend earlier.  Now looking more forward to spring and Boston, the week of which I next see him in New York.

thank you chicago

Had the afternoon off, a mild misty day, the region can’t make up its mind on the weather pattern, took advantage of it for a nice relaxing 6 mile run around the parkway.  Running these days is nice, no commitments, no structure, no nothing…

Got back home, finally got myself onto the Chicago Marathon site to sign up before today’s deadline…except it said – surprise – all application deadlines closed at 2 pm Central time, it was 3:30 here in the East!  Panic set over as if I’d missed a college or work app deadline, went ahead and filled out anyway and submitted – in about 5 minutes, going to have to check my info – the registration.  I was cursing myself…and the site for thrusting a new deadline on me…

Apparently they still accepted my application, as I got a confirmation e-mail back, they just have to confirm my qualifying time from Boston.  Paranoid, I called their office to confirm receipt and then sent an e-mail for good measure.

I guess 2 pm Central time didn’t really mean 2 pm, brought me back to high school and college where deadlines were often appropriately forgiving.  Thank you Professor Chicago.

autumn around the corner

the road to new york

My son left for New York today to move into his new digs in Brooklyn for the new year at college, a cool day that feels like October, got in a good 12 miler in the park.  A 5k tomorrow evening that’s forecasted to be even cooler, with a Friday nite post race party in the neighborhood.  Adding some miles beforehand.  Took the plunge and agreed to run a couple of x-country races in September with an area club’s masters team, will be fun and will be incorporated into the month’s marathon training.  No rest for the marathoner.

good times ahead

the road to new york

Did the recovery run this afternoon that I missed yesterday due to the sore left foot from the race, the foot felt much better today allowing me to do a nice 15 miler on a sunny comfortable day.  The first 9 miles were with my son and then added on 6 for good measure.  The miles are starting the creep up as this marathon training gets rolling, though the intensity in effort and miles won’t hit full stride til September.  Looks like my son found a nice place in Brooklyn to live off campus with friends for his second year at school, excited for him, and now I can stay a little longer after the marathon.

on the road to new york

Decided to sleep in a little this morning and skip the 5k, the legs and the rest of the body feeling the effects of this week getting back into training.  Instead, went for an afternoon 9 miler in the park.  The legs were a little sore but can tell they’re getting stronger.  A pleasant afternoon, getting warmer but the breeze cooled things off.

Excited for tomorrow, my son’s coming home for the summer after completing freshman year at NYU, can’t believe it’s already 8 months since dropping him off in New York.  Happy.

day and nite

Took a rest day on Thursday, it was about time for a break after a couple of weeks of mileage build up, physically and mentally the body was asking for one.

Friday was a 10 miler with my son in the park, and nice run and conversation, his freshman year at college is going very well all around.

Pushed up the mileage this afternoon in the park to 14 miles, a little tired but a good longer run.  The temps in the 30’s made it more comfortable.  The run began at daylight and ended in the dark, making it feel like I’d been running all day.

happy friday

10 miles with my son this evening, cold, windchill near 0 F, a great run, hadn’t run with him in a while since he’d been away at college.  Good that we’re both in shape so that no one had to speed up for the other.  We’ll be doing more runs before he heads back to NYC.  Now having dinner.  That’s all, simply a nice Friday night, hope yours is too.
