It was cloudy and cool overnight, then the clouds disappeared and the sun shined bright beginning around 8 am, making the 9 am 10k race a scorcher. With the heat and the sun, had trouble getting loose and so started the race conservatively, not going out with the leaders. Kept my cool – even if I couldn’t get cool – and caught several runners along the 6.2 mile route, and came through in 5th overall, a time of 35:06. Not a post-forty PR and wanted to get under 35 min – saw the clock ticking coldly past 34:59 as I sprinted towards the finish line in vain – still happy with it and the effort, a 5:38/mile pace.
Crowd support was great throughout, the local town folk really come out for this, many watching from their front lawn. A great time afterwards at the post-race, a great way to spend the 4th. Happy 4th!
