A late post after a late run, a 9:45 pm start on an 8 miler through Buffalo streets under a cool mostly clear starry night sky. Sometimes I’m apprehensive about running at night, not for safety reasons, but that it would be dead out, boring. That’s never the case, of course. There’s always life going on at night, lights on, pedestrians, and traffic. At the very least, the clouds and stars follow along to keep you company.
Many years ago, my work schedule required me to more than a few times run late at night, as late as midnight, sometimes in the dead of Buffalo winter – midnight in Buffalo winter, hello? – training for a marathon. Those were some of the best runs, completely in the moment, accompanied by the moon, stars, and silence. I forgot how much I enjoyed night runs; I have to do these more often.
